The month of April in the state of Washington is dedicated to highlighting the importance of managing your records efficiently and effectively.

According to a recent proclamation by Governor Jay Inslee, the management of public records, information, and data is “critical to every government agency for effective and efficient operations.”

The proclamation, issued earlier this year, also calls attention to the fact that “control and governance of records, information, and data are necessary for the reduction of risk, liability and associated costs, as well as for compliance with global standards and practices.”

Please take time during Records and Information Management Month to evaluate how you are managing your CWU records (paper and electronic) and get familiar with what resources are available to you.

You can learn more about the following on the CWU Records Management Website:

  • Basics of Records Management
  • Record Retention Information (WA State General and CWU Retentions)
  • Destruction Procedures (Records cannot be destroyed without an approved destruction request form)
  • What to do with Records that are Archival
  • Shred service schedule
  • Information guides on how long to retain social media, emails, texts, etc.

If you need help identifying records or would like to set up a time to discuss any issues related to records retention, email Kerrie Nelson in Business Services at nelsonke@cwu.edu.
